I think we all know about the horrific 7-0 loss that Mexico suffered against Chile last month in Santa Clara, Calif. Well that is well behind them now as “Potro” Gutierrez is preparing his 23 man roster for Rio 2016. You might say that El Tri have it rather easy this time around in Group C which includes Germany, Fiji, and South Korea, but I don’t think they want to underestimate their competition especially right now with what’s happening with Iceland in the Euros. Here are 4 key players that I believe will help Mexico advance to knockout stages…and hopefully get a gold medal.
- Hirving Lozano, Forward/Winger.
We all saw him excel in the Copa America group stage and now we can watch him score more goals in Rio. Tuzos forward is a great example of the perfect player in my opinion. Crazy fast and can play on both wings and create amazing chances or can play up top and finish amazing set pieces. He can give you everything in 90 minutes or can come on a “Super Sub” and stir up some trouble for the opposing teams defense.
Hirving Lozano has already caught the attention of some big European clubs and with USA not having qualified for the Olympics in soccer all eyes or Mexico right now. With clubs in major need of some forwards right now I think Chucky might want a different ending this tournament. Personally, I believe that if Porto make an offer Lozano will take it.
- Cesar Montes, Defender
A staple in the Monterrey defense, 19-year- old Cesar Montes will play a major role in Mexico’s backline with Carlos Salcedo.
When he’s on the field some have said that Montes resembles Diego Reyes who won this tournament in 2012. Clears the ball efficiently, tall, and smart positioning it’s like looking in a mirror. Germany known for producing amazing forwards will sure be trying to press up against Mexico’s backline, but Montes is one player who can give the keeper a little ease up.
- Carlos Salcedo, Defender
Fan favorite at Chivas. Strong defender. Give his all every game. What more do you need? I think we are all going to find out why scouts have been tracking Salcedo. With Montes and Salcedo on the backline and Lozano up top. I believe Mexico have what it takes to bring home a gold medal this tournament.
- Erick Gutierrez, Midfielder
Just as talented as Tuzos teammate Chucky Lozano, Erick Gutierrez is another key player to watch for during Rio 2016. Dangerous in the midfield with a passing accuracy percentage in the high 80’s. As if having a killer passing percentage wasn’t enough Gutierrez also doesn’t seem to have trouble finding the back of the net as he holds a 12 goals in 99 games stat. With both his passing, speed, and shots combined Erick Gutierrez will definitely be key player for El Tri this tournament. Did I mention he also captained Mexico’s U-20 National Team to a CONCACAF championship last year.
Let me know who you think deserves to be on this list!
